Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is ranked as the leading cause of death in Vietnam. The World Health Organization reports that it is in fact the number one cause of death globally, representing 31% of all deaths. In Viet Nam, CVDs were responsible for 31% of total deaths in 2016 — the equivalent to more than 170, 000 people.

The most common causes of CVD morbidity and mortality are ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and congestive heart failure (CHF). Risk factors include, amongst other things, tobacco use, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, high body mass index, and alcohol consumption. The burden of CVD will continue unless effective interventions for addressing its underlying risk factors are put in place. It’s very important for patients to take control of their health; it’s one of the keys to the prevention of heart disease.
