Kidney disease is a chronic condition in which a person’s kidney function is reduced or damaged. This affects the kidney’s ability to filter blood and therefore control the body’s water and other hormone levels, leading to increased fluid and waste within the body. This leads to high blood pressure and other serious conditions. Kidney disease is also often associated with other chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Chronic kidney disease has a number of stages, ranging in severity from Stage 1 to Stage 5, with the early stages often showing no symptoms. If kidney disease is detected early enough, the progress of the disease can be slowed and sometimes prevented. A person with end-stage kidney disease is generally reliant on kidney replacement therapy in the form of dialysis or kidney transplant.

According to the Australian National Health Survey, in 2017, there were 20,851 deaths caused by kidney disease, accounting for 13.0% of all deaths that year. In 2017–18, 1.0% of Australians had kidney disease, with men and women having similar rates of disease, increasing with age.

Care.Wallet can be a solution for managing kidney and other chronic diseases. With Care.Cards, patients, providers, family members, and others can share and track medical conditions and take immediate action to prevent worsening of health. With the How Are You Feeling Today (HAYFT) Care.Card, people can track health conditions remotely, and care providers can give patients recommendations based on their conditions. With Care Networks, organizations, including government agencies, can launch public health initiatives and connect people with the services they need. Care Network members can use their Care.Wallet to communicate and synchronize data, ensuring that records are instantaneously updated, making it easier and simpler to get timely treatment.

With this new approach, people can avoid the suffering that comes with chronic kidney disease, helping them live longer, healthier lives.
